I dream of a day when building a website, mobile app, desktop app in Ruby is not only possible, but is wicked awesome.

@headius I (and I would hope most people who love Ruby) want Ruby being fast enough to do all of the things we need to do without C etc.

@headius That's what I was getting at (maybe poorly) too.

@headius In the case of some C Extension in Ruby/Rubinius/JRuby, we are definitely leaning on C to make Ruby fast.

@merbist My point was that this "Learn C" mantra is a straw man.

@mitchellh I meant that we should get Ruby to where we don't have to lean on C or Java to make go fast.

@mitchellh "Good enough" was probably a bad choice of words.

@steveklabnik I think the school of "Rubyists Should Learn C" generally translates to "… so you can write CEXTs when Ruby is too slow."

@steveklabnik So is Assembly, right?

Hey devs, if you don't want to have to rely on C, make Ruby good enough to not need it.
