one morning we woke up and there was a dinghy in our front yard. (a dinghy IS a row boat, stupid-head.) it was tied to the doorknob so it wouldn't float away, i guess, and its still sitting there now.

two bands that are really great in my book have new records coming out real soon.

against me!'s is called searching for a former clarity. you can download a couple of the mp3s from the fat wreck chords site. i've already heard a copy of it and its ... growing on me. see the problem is i had heard a demo of a bunch of the songs that ended up on the record. and honestly, i think the demo versions are way way better. they just seem more alive. more vital. however, the songs that are new to me on the record i really like. so i imagine the rest will grow on me.

the other band releasing a new record soon is ... ::drumroll:: ... propagandhi. goddamn, this band is so effing good. they don't release new material or tour nearly often enough for this boy. it called Potemkin City Limits. more info about it here. preview of one song here. also, there's word that chris hannah is out of the band doing other things, but apparently he is on the recording. i wonder how the new dude sounds.

    but this isn't about that.

new orleans can show us a lot of what ifs... in action. the kind of things we only imagine possible scenarios when the lights go out. god, i don't know. we can't predict all the ways that things are gonna fall apart. but shouldn't we be learning some lessons from this? not just for the next natural disaster, but for when we can't start a car, let alone power a water purification plant.

come on, man. i can't quite articulate what i want to say here.

ps. listen to this radio interview with the mayor of new orleans. 14 minutes long. powerful stuff.

pps. i heard some friends of mine say the other day, not jokingly at all:

danae kelly, a real good friend of mine is sitting in federal prison for refusing to testify to a grand jury. here's what wikipedia had to say about the grand juries:

Criticism of the Grand Jury

Some argue that the grand jury is unjust as the defendant is not represented by counsel and/or does not have the right to call witnesses.

In practice, a grand jury rarely acts in a manner contrary to the wishes of the prosecutor. Judge Sol Wachtler, the former Chief Judge of New York State, was quoted as saying, "A grand jury would indict a ham sandwich". As such, many jurisdictions in the United States have replaced the formality of a grand jury with a procedure in which the prosecutor can issue charges by filing an information (also known as an accusation) which is followed by a preliminary hearing before a Judge at which both the defendant and his or her counsel are present. New York State itself has changed procedures that define how grand juries are formed to no longer require jurors to have former jury experience.

In some rare instances, the grand jury does break with the prosecutor. It can even exclude the prosecutor from its meetings and subpoena witnesses and issue indictments on its own. This is called a "runaway grand jury". Runaway grand juries sometimes happen in government corruption or organized crime cases, if the grand jury comes to believe that the prosecutor himself has been improperly influenced. They were common in the 19th century but have become rare since the 1930's. [1]

In all U.S. jurisdictions retaining the grand jury, the defendant has the right under the Fifth Amendment not to give self-incriminating testimony. However, the prosecutor can call the defendant to testify and require the defendant to assert the right on a question-by-question basis, which is prohibited in jury trials unless the defendant has voluntarily testified on his own behalf. Other evidentiary rules applicable to trials (such as the hearsay rule) are generally not applicable to grand jury proceedings.

i know you don't wanna believe that the world is changing. but it is. this isn't a wingnut weirdo phase i'm going thru. i just got lucky to have to good fortune to hear about it a few minutes before it happens.

but here's the score. we (we in the global sense, not the national sense) are reaching the defining era of our time. not 'our time' like my lifetime and yours and kids being born now. but our epoch which will be defined by the coming events. we are running out of oil.

The disparity between increasing production and declining discoveries can only have one outcome: a practical supply limit will be reached and future supply to meet conventional oil demand will not be available.

Cheap oil underpins our current lifestyle. It provides cheap transport by car or bus, cheap food, cheap goods, cheap manufacturing, cheap energy, and cheap products. It runs national and international trade.

-yemen times

    do this in this order:

    1. create a custom tag. let's say code. description: code. opening:
. closing:
.
    2. create a keyboard shortcut for that. let's say, command /.
    3. now make another custom tag. let's say, li. description: li. opening:
. closing:
.

now look at your custom tags. and notice code no longer has a shortcut. this is true with any number of custom tags. it's really frustrating. b/c i have quite a few custom tags that i've made that i use a lot. and anytime i identify a situation that i repeat a lot i try to make a shortcut and 'tag' for it, though they're not always actual html tags.

turns out he was, indeed, blinded by love.

file this story under classic tragedy up there with hamlet and oedipus.

and spidey was right about another thing. things always get worse before they get better. for denizens of the star wars galaxy. things get a LOT worse before they get better.

seems like that peter parker knows a thing or two about a thing or two.

i had a girlfriend once with whom i had a good relationship with up to a certain point. then it reached that point where we started falling apart and we tried to fix it and it wasn't happening. so we should've let go then. but we held on for far too long after that. that remaining time was prolly the worst time of my life. lots of lines were drawn in the sand. all of them were crossed. friends, mainly on her side but also on mine a little, were drawn in and caught in the crossfire. some of the meanest things that have ever been said to me, about me or by me were said during that time. and the thing is most of the things said were genuinely meant. so needless to say, i lost a lot of friends during the period over all that drama.

now, i'm back in the btown (home of all the drama) now. i've been back here several times since it all went down, but have always avoided the shows and spots where i might see 'the kids'. this time, however, things are different. i feel like enough times has passed that a) the kids that cared about whatever bullshit don't live here anymore, b/c its a college town and very transient with a high turnover rate or b) the kids that are still here that ever did care, don't care anymore. also, i dunno i feel really good about my life right. except for my girlfriend being 6,223 miles away from me. i'm happy with my living situation. my roomies are so radtackular. work is going well. the weather is my favourite time of the year. i'm starting to do some of those bigger projects i've been wanting to do. i'm paying off some debts. things are looking up generarlly.

and like spider-man said in spider-man: blue things always get worse before they get better. (now i know don't have to face down sandman, venom, green goblin/s, hobgoblin, carnage, doc ock, electro and a slew of other baddies, but i did live thru a couple shitty relationships, have had friend after friend sell me out or change their mind like the wind blows, lived with drug addicts, rednecks, assholes in general and have had my girlfriend move away, far far away more than once.) things got bad, real bad, for a while. now they seem to be getting better. i'm happy about that.

so i've derailed a little. i was saying basically it's been long enough and i feel good about my life that i feel like i can re-approach these friends. love lost but not forgotten, right? absolutely. we picked right back up where we left off. there were even the couple few that were on the opposite side of mean things said (by me or them) but none of it mattered anymore. we were bigger and more important than any other that. there wasn't any awkwardness from old drama. the only awkward was from just being different people than we were three years ago.

because there's nothing we can't do.
